I went on from there to become passionate about psychology.
and I have been involved in psychology in many different ways for the rest of my life up until this point.

went on from there

 up until this point については、前々回にてupのイメージを固めてあったのでニュアンスを正しく受け取ることが出来たぞ。

In 1981, I took myself to China. and I desided that I was going to be native level in Chinese inside two years.
Now, you need to understand that, in 1981, everybody thought Chinese was really really difficult and that a Westerner could study for ten years or more and never really get very good at it.

took myself to China

was going to

a Westerner

get good at~

get the hang of it

Now I also went in with a different idea which was taking all of the conclutions from psychological research up to that point and applying them to the learning process.
What is really cool was in 6 months I was fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and took a little bit longer to get up to native.

go in with ~

I went in with a different idea.

which was taking all of the ~中略~ and

I also went in with a different idea わたしは違うアイデアをもって臨みました which was taking そのアイデアとは取り入れる(取り出す・持ってくる) all of the conclutions 全ての結論を from psychological research 心理学研究から得られた up to (that) point その時点までに

and applying them to the learning process.

Apply pressure to your nose if you get a nosebleed. ⇔ 気持ちのプレッシャーは「put pressure」Their father always puts pressure on(ドスンと乗せるイメージ) his children.
  • apply cream to your skin → クリームを肌に塗る
  • apply them to the learning process → 心理学から得た知見を学習という対象に当ててみる → 心理学の知見を学習に応用する(知識・原理を学習に当てる)
  • apply this rule to the situation → このルールをその状況に適用する(このルールをその状況に持ってきて当ててみる)
  • Mandarin Chinese →

and took a little bit longer to get up to native.

But I looked around and I saw all of these people from different countries struggling terribly with Chinise, I saw Chinise people struggling terribly to learn English and other languages.
And so my question got refined down to : How can you help a normal adult learn a new language quickly easily and effectively?

refine

my question got refined down to ~ わたしの疑問は~ということに絞り込まれていった
